CHECKLIST OF SPECIES
Please click on a species' name to take you to that species page. On that page you will find thumbnailed photos that are linked to larger photos. It will also include details about the species and natural history information from my own experiences as well as those of others. Provided maps are very general in nature.
The marked parishes only represent the parishes in which they have been known to occur via documentation in The Amphibians and Reptiles of Louisiana by Harold Dundee and Douglas Rossman (LSU press 1989). Parishes that are listed but are not in the book are based on my findings and those of others.
Taxonomically, the corn snake in Louisiana presents some problems in the west central part of the state. It is not my intention to label them according to my own beliefs, but to present the arguements for each classification and wait for a definitive study to be done. (This may never be accomplished, but I can dream!)
Some species listed here, such as the eastern diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus) and the black pine snake (Pituophis melanoleucus lodingi) are of questionable presence within the state. Although the documented records of these snakes actually found in Louisiana can be counted on one hand and the origin of such species is questionable, they are listed on this site.
If you've got pictures of these species from Louisiana, please let us know! We especially need those of snakes not pictured on this site already.
