I'm starting to prepare to vend at a reptile show with my boyfriend Limey (
Royal Reptilia). Seriously, two days before the show starts!
Generally, when I work shows for the
International Reptile Conservation Foundation, my preparation time is nominal. The show boxes have been set aside ready for the next show, sitting in the designated IRCF area of the spare room. I usually check to see if the supplies are current, generate any necessary paperwork, and then move everything near the door ready for loading the next day. Not even an hour spent!
But, if you are vendor at a show, traveling with critters, dry goods and show supplies, that is a whole different gambit! I thought that I would give you a brief insight into what it takes to vend at a show as a reptile breeder.
This weekend we will be traveling to Hamburg, PA, for the Saturday
Northwestern Berks Reptile Show, one of the oldest shows on the East Coast; this year will be 20 years in the same venue. I find this show interesting because it's one of the few shows that also have venomous reptiles for sale. I love drooling over the baby Gila Monsters at
Glades Herp Farm's table.
Today, it has been prepping the animals and packing day! We made sure the critters were fed and well hydrated this morning, and then started packing them in the mid-afternoon. Packing isn't just a matter of randomly putting animals in containers. We check to make sure each animal is healthy and ready for sale and place the individuals into marked containers. We also ran last minute errands. After at least six hours or so of critter packing into the evening, we organized the remaining dry goods and supplies. Everything has been set aside for the morning task of loading the vehicle.
We have been working continuously, not having taken a meal. When my blood sugar has dropped, I am pretty much an angry panda, as anyone who knows me can attest to. To keep it simple, I had just heated up a pizza for us, which I so magnificently then dropped upside-down to the floor in the middle of transport to the counter. Not even the 3-second rule could have saved that meal, especially with our mixed Bengal cats thinking the dropped food was fair game; they already thought an escaped (but safe) bearded dragon was one! Grrrrr!!!! Now, we are waiting for delivery of one pizza which we will so enthusiastically dive into!
Once our stomachs are filled, we hopefully can get some hours of sleep. We have a long road ahead of us tomorrow morning - getting up at the crack of dawn!
Hope the coffee fairy wakes up that early!
