Happy World Snake Day!
What is that? Well it is a day that is an easy one! It is a day to focus on conservation and education about snakes!
Snakes are one of the greatest fears in the world, but their importance to our environment as well as our health is enough reason to work to change minds. I grabbed a few fun articles for you to read and share today to help reach out and share the joy of snakes.
These articles give a breakdown on the holiday and the issues facing snakes. This post from RepublicWorld is a very basic breakdown that you can read
here. Another option is this article from Newsd. It has some fun little trivia tidbits and again very basic info and can be found https://newsd.in/world-snake-day-2020-here-are-some-snake-facts-you-must-know/.
Next, let's head to India and a visit with Rom Whittaker at Madras from
Down To Earth:
According to Whitaker, habitat loss was the gravest threat to snakes. “This is especially true for snake species dependent on intact rainforest,” he said.
Other threats facing snakes today include climate change, disease and of course, human antagonism.
Experts also agree that there are many more species of snakes waiting to be discovered.
“There are over 3,500 species of snakes in the world and more being described right now. In the past couple of years, 20 new species have been added to India’s list,” Whitaker said.
While we are in India, reptile rescue has a WHOLE different meaning there than here in the US. Instead of dealing primarily with pets, the vast majority of their work is related to wild and venomous. Actor Sai Kiran Ram has saved thousands of snakes and shares some of his stories. Like how and why he got his start:
I’ve seen a bunch of people lynching a snake to death. I pleaded with them to not kill it. They asked me to rescue it then. I genuinely tried but was scared when it hissed at me. The snake was eventually killed but the experience was very haunting. I wondered who the villains here are – humans or the snakes! I then decided I should never let another snake die again in my life. It all started there.
